Your excuse for not leaving corporate expired last week


You have been telling yourself you cannot leave corporate because you do not know how to sell yourself.

Until last week, that was a fair excuse.

OpenAI shipped a sales assistant agent inside ChatGPT. Account research, meeting prep, pipeline planning, follow-up sequences, the work that used to live in a corporate sales operations team. Any non-technical user can deploy it in fifteen minutes. It costs the price of a gym membership.

The corporate sales team you never had as an independent is now sitting inside your ChatGPT account, waiting for instructions.

I want to tell you what this changes and what it does not, because the difference is where most senior executives are going to get stuck for the next twelve months.

What it changes is the thing your peers have been quietly using as their excuse for not starting. "I am not a marketer. I do not know how to do outbound. I cannot see myself cold messaging on LinkedIn." Fine. You no longer have to. The agent does the research. The agent drafts the meeting prep. The agent coaches the conversation.

Jason Lemkin, the founder of SaaStr, posted publicly last week that his entire company now runs outbound, inbound qualification, and customer reactivation on a small stack of specialized agents. He runs a conference business with a podcast. Roughly the operational shape of a senior independent practice.

What this does not change is the harder part. The agent is a system. It needs something to run.

It needs your expertise, written down in a form that travels outside your employer's network. It needs your offer, defined clearly enough that a stranger can decide in thirty seconds whether they want to talk to you. It needs an audience, even a small one, of people who recognise your name. It needs your own methodology, separate from the firm's.

Without those four things, the agent has nothing to act on. With them, the agent compresses what used to be a five-person team into a workflow that runs on your laptop while you sleep.

This is the gap I see in almost every executive who has been "preparing to leave" for the last eighteen months. They have been waiting for the right tool, the right course, the right framework. The tool arrived last week. They still have not done the underlying work of packaging the asset that the tool needs.

The breakthrough already happened. It is sitting in your ChatGPT account. What is missing is on your side, and it has been missing the whole time.

Block two hours this week. Answer four questions on one page.

What is the specific problem I have spent 20+ years learning to solve?

Who is the person with that problem, by name and by industry, who has both the budget and the authority to hire me?

What is the simplest version of an offer that connects the two? Two sentences, no jargon.

What is the proof that I can deliver it?

Those four answers are the asset. Once they are clear, you can hand them to a sales assistant agent and watch a system you used to need a team for run from your kitchen table.

Without them, you will keep starting and stopping, blaming the tools, while the executives who packaged their expertise six months ago sign their first paying clients.

Selling yourself was always the hardest part of this transition. AI is the easier part. Selling yourself is still the only thing the technology cannot do for you.
